Sheriff's Office introduces community-purchased K9!

03/05/2018

Back in the spring of 2017, the Sheriff’s Office began fundraising to replace our existing K9, Zeke, who was in poor health and badly needed to retire.  Our community responded in a huge way, raising just under $13,000 by the fall of 2017!  The Sheriff’s Office also partnered with a calendar company, of which the proceeds were to go toward the purchase of a new K9, equipment, and drug enforcement and education.  The calendar project brought in $4,500, creating advertising for our local businesses, as well helping us reach the goal of welcoming our new dog, Xinie!  Xinie is a female German Shepherd from the Czech Republic, purchased through a Police K9 Supplier in North Little Rock.  With the community’s donations, and the calendar project, we were able to purchase her, as well as some much-needed equipment.  Xinie is a dual-purpose dog, which means she has the ability to locate and alert to the presence of narcotics, evidence, and people.  She also has the ability to protect her handler, as well as apprehend criminals if they attempt to flee.  At least in this case, her bite IS worse than her bark!

There were some questions raised about a dog we had during the summer of 2017, and I wanted to fill everyone in on the details to help eliminate any confusion.  During the summer, we had a dog named Justice, for a no-cost, no-obligation trial-period.  During the course of the trial period, we purchased some equipment that was needed for the K9 program.  However, it was determined that Justice would not meet our needs, and the dog was returned.  We were able to keep the purchased equipment to be used with Xinie.  Among the equipment purchased were a remote door popper and a heat sensor that automatically opens the rear door if the interior of the truck reaches a certain temperature.  These items are designed to keep the handler and the dog safe, and we’re very glad to have them.

I am so grateful to everyone who helped us raise the money to purchase Xinie, and thankful that we have such a supportive community.  Xinie has been on the street since the end of December, and has been working hard for the citizens of Cleburne County!
